DC Parking
The best parking apps for DC are not all the same. Using the wrong one for the situation is how people end up with tickets, no spot, or circling blocks for 20 minutes. Here’s what each one actually does — and when to use which.
The short answer:
ParkMobile — paying for DC meters and street parking. Non-negotiable.
SpotHero — reserving garage spots in advance. Book before you leave home.
SpotAngels — finding free parking and checking street rules before you leave.
ParkWhiz — alternative to SpotHero for garage reservations.
ParkDC — official DC app for parking maps and zone info.
ParkMobile — The Essential DC App
ParkMobile
Street meters
Free to download
Small transaction fee
ParkMobile is the official payment app for DC metered street parking. The District Department of Transportation partnered with ParkMobile citywide — which means this is not optional if you’re parking on DC streets.
You enter your zone number (found on the green sticker on the meter), select your time, and pay. You can extend your session remotely without running back to the meter.
Critical: Make sure the correct license plate number is in your account before starting a session. DC enforcement officers check plates against the app’s database — not the meter display.
Set it up before your trip. Not while you’re standing on a busy street trying to figure out the zone number.
SpotHero — Best for Reserving Garages in Advance
SpotHero
Garage reservations
Events & concerts
Often cheaper than walk-in
SpotHero is the app to use when you want to guarantee a garage spot before you leave home — especially for events at The Anthem, concerts, busy summer weekends, or cherry blossom season when street parking becomes nearly impossible.
You search by location, see available garages with real-time pricing, book and prepay through the app, then show your digital pass at the garage. Booking through SpotHero often gets you a lower rate than walk-in pricing — sometimes significantly lower.
Best use cases: Events at The Anthem, National Mall visits during peak season, weekend nights in Georgetown or Dupont, anything where you cannot afford to circle for 30 minutes.
One thing to know: Read the garage instructions carefully in the app — entry procedures vary by location. Book early on high-demand days.
SpotAngels — Best for Finding Free Parking
SpotAngels
Free parking maps
Street rule checker
Free to use
SpotAngels is a community-based app that shows you where free and cheap parking exists on a map, filtered by day and time. Use it the night before — not when you’re already driving.
DC’s parking rules are complex and vary block by block. SpotAngels lets you scout your options before you leave and avoid showing up somewhere with no idea where to park.
Best use case: Planning a Sunday visit to a museum or The Wharf. Filter by Sunday and the map shows you every free spot in the area. Works great alongside SpotHero — use SpotAngels to see if free parking exists, and SpotHero if you want a guaranteed spot instead.
ParkWhiz — Alternative for Garage Reservations
ParkWhiz
Garage reservations
Event parking
Airport parking
ParkWhiz works similarly to SpotHero — search by location, compare rates, book in advance. It’s worth checking both apps for the same search because prices vary between them for the same garages.
Best use case: If SpotHero doesn’t have availability near your destination, ParkWhiz often has the same or nearby garages at different prices. Also useful for airport parking at DCA, Dulles, and BWI.
ParkDC — Official DC Parking Map
ParkDC
Official DDOT app
Zone info
Free
ParkDC is the official app from the District Department of Transportation. It shows metered parking locations, real-time space availability in some areas, and color-coded maps of parking density — red means 0–2 spaces, orange is 3–4, green is 5 or more.
Best use case: Checking official parking regulations for a specific area before you go. More useful for research than real-time navigation. Website: parkdc.com
How to Use These Apps Together
Night before: Open SpotAngels, enter your destination, and check what free parking exists and what the rules are. If free parking looks feasible, note the best options.
Day of: If you’re going to a garage, open SpotHero and book your spot in advance. If you’re doing street parking, make sure ParkMobile is set up with your correct license plate.
On arrival: Pay via ParkMobile for street parking. Set a reminder on your phone before the rush hour window starts (3:30pm on weekdays) if you’re on a restricted street.
