Parking near the Smithsonian is the question every DC visitor asks and almost nobody answers correctly. Here’s the truth: there is no Smithsonian parking lot. Not for the Air and Space Museum. Not for the Natural History Museum. Not for the American History Museum. The Smithsonian Institution operates 19 museums and the National Mall campus has zero dedicated public parking attached to any of them.
What exists instead is a patchwork of garages, metered streets, and free lots that locals know and tourists spend 45 minutes circling to find. Here’s the map.
π ΏοΈ Reserve National Mall Area Parking
Garages near the Smithsonian museums fill fast on weekends and school group season. Book a guaranteed spot before you leave.
Why There’s No Smithsonian Parking Lot
The National Mall is federally managed parkland. The Smithsonian museums sit on NPS-controlled land along the Mall between 3rd Street and 14th Street NW. Congress has never approved a public parking structure on Mall grounds β the land is protected open space. What the NPS does maintain are a limited number of metered spaces along Madison Drive NW and Jefferson Drive SW directly adjacent to the museums, but these are a fraction of what visitor demand requires.
On a busy spring Saturday, every meter on the Mall fills within an hour of opening. School group season β April through June β is the worst. If you’re visiting during that window without a plan, you will circle.
Best Parking Garages Near the Smithsonian Museums
1. Ronald Reagan Building Garage β 1300 Pennsylvania Ave NW
One of the best options for the east Mall museums β Air and Space, Natural History, American History. Located just north of the Mall on Pennsylvania Avenue, about a 5β8 minute walk to most Smithsonian entrances. Public access available on weekends. Weekday rates are higher but it’s centrally located for a full Mall day.
2. National Museum of the American Indian Garage β 4th Street SW
This is the closest public garage to the east Mall cluster. Located just south of the Mall near the American Indian Museum. Rates are reasonable and it’s a short walk to Air and Space, American History, and Natural History. One of the least-known options among tourists β which means it’s often more available than garages to the north.
3. L’Enfant Plaza Garage β 458 L’Enfant Plaza SW
Sits just south of the Mall near the Hirshhorn Museum and the Freer Gallery. About an 8-minute walk north to the center of the Mall museum corridor. L’Enfant Plaza has a Metro station, a food court, and consistent garage availability β making it a solid base for a full Smithsonian day.
4. 14th Street Corridor Garages
Several commercial garages sit along 14th Street NW between Pennsylvania Avenue and Constitution Avenue. These put you at the west end of the Mall museum cluster β closest to American History and Natural History. Good option if those two museums are your priority. Rates typically run $20β$35 for the day.
π¨ Staying Near the Smithsonian?
Hotels along the Mall corridor β Penn Quarter, Downtown DC, Southwest Waterfront β put you within walking distance of multiple Smithsonian museums with no parking required.
Street Parking on the National Mall: What’s Available
Metered parking runs along Madison Drive NW (north side of the Mall) and Jefferson Drive SW (south side). These are the closest street spots to the museum entrances β and the most contested. Meters run $2.30β$3.00/hour with a 2-hour maximum. ParkMobile app required.
Your best chance at a meter is early morning on weekdays β before 9am. On weekend mornings during spring and summer, these spots are gone before 8:30am. Don’t build your plan around finding a meter on a busy day.
Independence Avenue SW running parallel to the south side of the Mall has additional metered parking with slightly better availability β worth checking if Madison and Jefferson are full.
Free Parking Options Near the Smithsonian
East Potomac Park / Ohio Drive SW: The free lots along Ohio Drive SW that serve the Lincoln Memorial also work for the west end Smithsonian museums β Freer, Sackler, Hirshhorn β with about a 15β20 minute walk. Best for visitors combining the monuments and the west Mall museums in one day.
RFK Stadium area: Free parking about 2 miles east of the Mall. Pair with a DC Circulator bus or rideshare. Not ideal for a quick visit but smart for an all-day trip when you want to avoid garage fees entirely.
Take the Metro β this is the honest answer: The Smithsonian station on the Blue/Orange/Silver lines puts you at the center of the Mall museum corridor β steps from the Natural History Museum and American History Museum. L’Enfant Plaza station serves the south Mall museums. For the Smithsonian specifically, the Metro is genuinely faster and cheaper than driving and parking in almost every scenario. If you’re coming from anywhere in the DC metro area with Metro access, use it.
