DC Metro Service Alerts: What to Know Before You Ride in DC

Metro Alert: No Rail Service to Reagan National Airport Through June 21

DC Metro service alerts: If you’re flying in or out of Reagan National Airport (DCA) and planning to take the Metro, you need to know this before you go.

Last updated: May 31, 2026 — current alert for Reagan National Airport Metro closure through June 21.

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has suspended rail service between Pentagon City and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on multiple weekends through June 21, 2026. Crystal City station is also closed during these dates.

Affected Dates

  • Saturday, May 30 – Sunday, May 31
  • Saturday, June 6 – Sunday, June 7
  • Saturday, June 13 – Sunday, June 14
  • Friday, June 19 – Sunday, June 21 (Juneteenth weekend — plan ahead)

What Lines Are Affected

Both the Yellow Line and Blue Line are impacted. There is no rail service between Pentagon City and Reagan National Airport on the dates above.

What to Do Instead

Free shuttle bus service is available. WMATA is providing complimentary shuttle buses between Pentagon City and the airport during the closure. Allow extra time — shuttle service adds to your travel window, especially during peak travel periods.

Your options:

  • Take the free WMATA shuttle from Pentagon City to the airport (or reverse)
  • Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) directly to/from DCA — often the simplest choice if you’re traveling with luggage or a group
  • Drive and park — Reagan National has on-site parking garages, though weekend rates apply
  • Taxi — available curbside at the airport

If You’re Staying in Alexandria

Good news: trains are still running south toward Alexandria. This closure specifically affects travel toward DC via the airport stations. If your hotel is in Alexandria, your Metro access is unaffected — just don’t assume you can hop a train north through Crystal City without checking first.

Tips for Travelers

  • Build in extra time. Shuttle buses run on their own schedule and can fill up during busy travel windows.
  • Check WMATA’s real-time alerts at wmata.com before heading to the station, especially during Juneteenth weekend (June 19–21), which will see heavier than usual travel.
  • Traveling with a group or heavy luggage? Skip the shuttle entirely and rideshare directly to your destination.
  • Arriving late at night? Shuttle frequency may be reduced — confirm the schedule in advance.
