DC Airports: DCA vs IAD vs BWI — Which One Should You Use?
The DC area has three major airports and choosing the wrong one costs you time, money, or both. Here’s the honest breakdown.
Reagan National Airport (DCA): The Convenience Choice
Reagan National is the closest airport to downtown DC — about 4 miles south across the Potomac in Arlington, Virginia. Metro to the terminal, through security, on the plane. No highway, no long drive, no shuttle.
Distance: 4 miles, 15–20 minutes by Metro or car in normal traffic.
Metro: Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport station (Blue/Yellow lines) — direct to Terminal B/C via enclosed walkway. Metro Center to DCA is about 15 minutes.
Airlines: American Airlines hub. Also Delta, United, Southwest, JetBlue.
Flight restrictions: Perimeter rule — most nonstop flights limited to destinations within 1,250 miles. No long-haul domestic or international flights from DCA.
Parking: On-airport garage $29–$35/day. Economy Lot $25/day (reduced capacity 2026). Off-site lots near Crystal City from $8.50/day with free shuttles.

Dulles International Airport (IAD): The International Hub
Dulles is DC’s international airport — 26 miles west via the toll-free Dulles Access Road. The Silver Line Metro extension (opened November 2022) adds a rail option for the first time.
Distance: 26 miles west, 40–50 minutes in normal traffic, 60–90 minutes during rush hour.
Metro: Washington Dulles International Airport station (Silver Line) — about 60–70 minutes to downtown DC, no transfers. Park free at Ashburn or Loudoun Gateway and ride in.
Airlines: United Airlines hub. Virtually every major international carrier — British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, Korean Air, Emirates, and dozens more.
No flight restrictions: No perimeter rule. Nonstop flights to any domestic or international destination.
Parking: Daily Garage $17–$22/day. Economy Lots A & B $12–$15/day with free shuttle. Off-site lots from $7/day.

IAD works best when: Flying internationally, coming from Northern Virginia, needing the widest route selection, or flying nonstop long-haul domestic.
Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI): The Value Option
BWI sits 32 miles northeast — closer to Baltimore than Washington. Southwest Airlines hub. Historically the cheapest option and still delivers real savings on the right routes.
Distance: 32 miles northeast, 45–60 minutes by car.
Transit: MARC Penn Line to Union Station in about 40 minutes (weekdays primarily). No Metro access.
Airlines: Southwest hub. Also Delta, United, American, Spirit, Frontier.
Parking: Some of the best airport parking value in the region — long-term lots from $8–$10/day.

Timing and Traffic: The Factor Most People Ignore
Rush hour on the Dulles Access Road (4–7pm weekdays) can turn a 40-minute drive into 90 minutes. I-95 toward BWI on Friday afternoon is similarly brutal. DCA on Monday morning means packed Metro cars.
