Unscripted DC
Living here, not just visiting.
Rock Creek Park
Biking Rock Creek Park is one of the only places in DC where you can ride for miles under tree cover and forget you’re in the city at all. Beach Drive cuts through the park, large sections are permanently closed to cars, and the trail connects from Georgetown all the way to the Maryland border.
Best overall ride: Georgetown → north through the Zoo → Beach Drive → turn around at Peirce Mill. About 8–12 miles round trip, mostly car-free, best mix of scenery and ease. About 1–1.5 hours at a relaxed pace. This is the default play for most riders.
The Beach Drive Car-Free Sections
This is what makes Rock Creek Park unique — the closest thing DC has to a true car-free road ride. Since November 2022, the National Park Service permanently closed several sections of Beach Drive to motor vehicles:
- DC/Maryland line to West Beach Drive NW
- Wise Road to Picnic Area 10
- Joyce Road to Broad Branch Road NW
These sections are permanently open to cyclists, runners, and walkers. Wide paved road, tree canopy overhead, no cars. On a clear morning it’s one of the best urban rides in the country.
The Rock Creek Trail
Separate from Beach Drive, the Rock Creek Trail is a paved multi-use path that runs the length of the park and connects to the broader DC trail network.
Beach Drive vs Rock Creek Trail: Want space and speed → ride Beach Drive. Want a fully separated path away from any cars → take the Rock Creek Trail.
Georgetown to the National Mall — 4.6 miles round trip
Start at the Georgetown Waterfront under the Whitehurst Freeway and follow the trail along the Potomac River past the Watergate Complex and Kennedy Center to the National Mall. Flat, scenic, well-marked. About 30–45 minutes.
Georgetown to Rock Creek Park — 8 miles round trip
Same starting point, continue north past the National Zoo to Peirce Mill and deeper into Rock Creek Park. Some of the best scenery in the park. About 45–75 minutes.
Rules for Cyclists
- Paved roads and trails only. Unpaved hiking trails and horse trails are off-limits to cyclists — NPS policy, actively enforced.
- Yield to pedestrians. Call out “on your left” when passing, especially on busy weekend mornings near the Zoo and Peirce Mill.
- E-bikes are allowed on paved roads and paved trails. Not allowed on unpaved trails.
- Helmets: Not legally required for adults in DC, but strongly recommended. Required by law for riders under 16.
- Lights: DC law requires a white front light and red rear light for night riding.
Getting a Bike
Capital Bikeshare
The easiest option if you’re visiting DC without your own bike. Start at the Georgetown Waterfront station. Day pass = unlimited 30-minute rides. Dock every ~25 minutes at Georgetown, Zoo, or Peirce Mill stations to avoid overage fees. Three stations are also at The Wharf if you’re starting from that end. See our full DC bike rental guide for all options.
Bringing Your Own Bike
Free parking is available at the Nature Center and picnic grove lots along Beach Drive. Bike racks are available at the Nature Center. See our Rock Creek Park parking guide for lot locations.
Best Times to Ride
Weekday mornings — best overall. Car-free sections feel genuinely remote, trail is uncrowded.
Weekend mornings before 10am — still good, especially on northern Beach Drive sections further from the Zoo.
Weekend afternoons — crowded near the Zoo and southern trail. Still rideable, just slower.
Avoid: Holiday weekends in good weather — very busy, not a fast ride.
Connecting to the Broader Trail Network
Capital Crescent Trail — connects at Georgetown, running northwest toward Bethesda and Silver Spring. Mostly paved, popular with commuters.
Metropolitan Branch Trail — connects via Piney Branch Parkway, running northeast toward Fort Totten and Union Station.
National Mall trails — the southern end connects to the Mall trail network, giving you access to the monuments by bike.
You can link Rock Creek Park to Georgetown, the Mall, and beyond without touching a car lane for most of the distance.
