Living here, not just visiting.
Rock Creek Park
Rock Creek Park parking is free throughout the park — no meters, no fees. But knowing where the lots are and how Beach Drive works makes a real difference in how your visit goes.
Unscripted DC Local guide Updated for 2026
The short answer: Parking at Rock Creek Park is completely free. No meters, no pay stations, no fees at any of the park’s lots or pull-offs. You just need to know where the lots are and understand the Beach Drive situation before you head out.

Main Parking Areas
Nature Center — 5200 Glover Road NW
The park’s main visitor center with two paved parking lots arranged in a one-way circle. The most reliable place to park if you’re new to the park. From here you can access trail maps, restrooms, and connect to multiple trail systems including the Western Ridge Trail.
Best for: First-time visitors, families, anyone who wants trail maps before heading out.
Peirce Mill
Its own parking area near Tilden Street NW. Restrooms available. Good launching point for trails along Rock Creek itself and for visiting the 19th-century gristmill.
Best for: Walkers who want creek-side trails, history buffs.
Picnic Grove Lots Along Beach Drive
The park has 24 numbered picnic groves scattered throughout, most with their own parking areas. These are your best option for getting deeper into the park without a long walk from a main lot.
- Picnic Grove 1 — medium lot, ~50 cars, street overflow available, restrooms on-site
- Picnic Grove 6 — large parking area, restrooms nearby
- Picnic Grove 8 — medium lot along Beach Drive between road and creek
- Picnic Grove 10 — medium lot on Beach Drive NW
All picnic grove parking is free and first-come, first-served. The picnic areas require reservations April through November for groups, but the parking lots are open to all visitors at any time.
Broad Branch Road Parking Lot
Located off Broad Branch Road. Gives access to the Western Ridge Trail and connects to the Peirce Mill area. Good backup if the Nature Center lots are full on busy weekend mornings.

The Beach Drive Situation
Beach Drive is the main road running through the interior of Rock Creek Park. As of November 2022, the National Park Service permanently closed several sections to motor vehicles to create car-free space for pedestrians and cyclists:
- Beach Drive NW from Broad Branch Road NW to Joyce Road NW
- Beach Drive from Grove 10 to Wise Road NW
- Beach Drive from West Beach Drive NW to the Maryland boundary
- Sherrill Drive NW — permanently closed to vehicles
- Ross Drive NW — permanently closed to vehicles
What this means for parking: If you’re driving to a picnic grove on a closed section of Beach Drive, you need to enter from a different direction. Check nps.gov/rocr or Google Maps before heading out to confirm the current access route for your specific destination.
Rock Creek Parkway rush hour rules: Separate from Beach Drive, Rock Creek Parkway is one-way southbound 6:45–9:30am on weekdays, and one-way northbound 3:45–6:30pm on weekdays. Factor this into your route if driving in during rush hour.

When Parking Fills Up
Weekday mornings are rarely an issue. Weekend mornings are more competitive, especially at the Nature Center and Beach Drive lots closest to popular trail access points.
Arrive before 9am on weekend mornings if you want a spot near a specific trailhead. By 10–11am on a nice Saturday the most popular lots are often full.
If your first choice is full, the park is large and lots are spread out. Drive a bit further along Beach Drive or Glover Road and you’ll almost always find space at a less-used picnic grove lot.

Street Parking Near the Park
Residential streets bordering Rock Creek Park in neighborhoods like Cleveland Park, Chevy Chase, Woodley Park, and Mount Pleasant offer additional parking. Standard DC RPP zone rules apply — non-residents are limited to 2 hours during enforcement hours. Check signs carefully before leaving your car.

Getting There Without a Car
Metro: Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan station (Red Line) and Cleveland Park station (Red Line) are both walkable to the southern sections of the park.
Bike: Capital Bikeshare stations exist near several park entry points. The park connects to DC’s broader trail network and is one of the best cycling destinations in the city. See our guide to biking Rock Creek Park for routes and tips.
