Where Fort Dupont Is

Bordered by East Capitol Street to the north, Fort Dupont Park to the south, Minnesota Avenue to the west, and Fort Chaplin Park to the east. About 7,000 residents. No Metro station directly in the neighborhood — Minnesota Avenue (Orange Line) and Benning Road (Blue/Silver Lines) are both roughly a mile away. Most residents drive. The Anacostia Freeway connects north toward the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and south toward I-95.

A Neighborhood Built Around a Civil War Fort

Fort Dupont Park is the grounds of a Civil War-era fort built for the defense of Washington — now one of the largest green spaces in the city. Roughly 10 miles of hiking trails, the unpaved Fort Circle Hiker-Biker Trail, community gardens, picnic pavilions, and a free summer concert series that’s been a neighborhood tradition for decades.

The park also houses the Fort Dupont Ice Arena, the Fort Dupont Outdoor Pool, and the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy — offering free academic and athletic programming to kids across Wards 7 and 8.

The Architecture

American Foursquare homes and bungalows along Minnesota Avenue mixed with split-level houses, duplexes, and apartment buildings on quieter side streets. Most residents rent rather than own — Fort Dupont skews toward apartment living more than its leafy, parkside reputation might suggest.

What’s Actually Nearby

Fort Dupont itself doesn’t have much dining and shopping — that’s the honest tradeoff. Along Minnesota Avenue: Norma’s Breakfast for homestyle morning food, and a Safeway for groceries. For more, residents head to the H Street Corridor for bars, restaurants, and the DC Streetcar, or cross into Prince George’s County just over the border.
