July 4th 2026 DC: Parking, Road Closures & Metro Guide

Washington, DC’s 250th birthday celebration is the biggest July 4th this city has seen since the Bicentennial. Here’s what you actually need to know to for July 4th DC parking, and other logistics.

Quick Answer

  • Road closures6 am – 10:30 pm around the National Mall (some restrictions start as early as 4 am)
  • ParadeNational Independence Day Parade starts 10:30 am at 3rd Street & Constitution Ave NW
  • FireworksStart time TBD — check 250.dc.gov before you go (still being finalized between roughly 9 and 11 pm as of late June)
  • MetroRuns 6 am – 2 am, free fares after 5 pm
  • Bottom lineDon’t drive downtown. Park outside the perimeter and walk or Metro in.

Road Closures: What’s Actually Closed

Starting at 4 am on July 4, streets around the Mall close to “thru” traffic — local access (residents, garages, deliveries) is still allowed. The full perimeter, covering Constitution Avenue, Independence Avenue, Memorial Bridge, Rock Creek Parkway, and the cross streets between 14th and 23rd, is shut from 6 am to 10:30 pm.

If you need to cross from one side of the Mall to the other without going through the security perimeter, use 3rd Street or 14th Street.

Also closed for parking, July 3–4: Constitution Avenue from 7th to 17th Street NW (parade support).

Where to Park

Don’t try to find street parking near the Mall — it’s extremely limited and a lot of it is posted Emergency No Parking. A few better options:

H Street / Gallery Place garage

Walkable to the Mall, sits outside the closure perimeter.

Navy Yard / Capitol Riverfront garage

South side option, also covers you if you’re catching the Nationals game that day.

Expect premium pricing — game + holiday crowd, same garages

L’Enfant Plaza garage

Close to the Mall — confirm it sits outside the closure perimeter before publishing.

Coming From Virginia? Skip Downtown Entirely

If you’re driving in from Northern Virginia, don’t aim for downtown DC at all. Park at a Metro park-and-ride and take the train in.

Franconia-Springfield (Blue Line) park-and-ride

Same approach as Vienna — get there early.

Coming From Maryland?

Metro

Trains run 6 am to 2 am with free fares after 5 pm. Expect crowding — Smithsonian Station goes entry-only after 9 pm, and stations near the Mall may temporarily close due to overcrowding after the fireworks. Build in extra time, especially for the ride home.

Getting In: Security

Entry to the Mall area requires TSA-style screening. Main entry points are at Constitution Avenue & 14th Street NW and Independence Avenue & 14th Street SW. Arrive early — queues will be long.

A Few Rules Worth Knowing

  • You cannot stop or stand on city streets to watch fireworks — it’s illegal, and you’ll be ticketed or towed.
  • The Great American State Fair (through July 10) is open July 4, 10 am – midnight, located between Constitution and Independence on the Mall — easy to combine with your trip.
  • Other events adding to traffic that day: a Nationals game at Nationals Park (11:05 am), the Palisades Parade (11 am, MacArthur Blvd closed 8 am–1 pm), and the Barracks Row Parade (10 am).

Bottom Line

This is not a normal July 4th — it’s the 250th anniversary, and the city is planning for record crowds. Don’t drive downtown. Park outside the perimeter, take Metro, and check 250.dc.gov the morning of for any last-minute changes.
