What Was the Great American State Fair?
The Great American State Fair ran the full length of the National Mall — U.S. Capitol to the Washington Monument — as the centerpiece of the federal Freedom 250 celebration. Every U.S. state and territory had its own pavilion. Maine lobster rolls sat next to Hawaii’s hula stage. Texas-sized steaks next to Alaska’s ice carvings. A 110-foot Ferris wheel went up near the Monument. There were military flyovers, outdoor movie screenings, daily themed programming, and live performances across 16 days.
It was World’s Fair scale, on the most iconic stretch of public land in America, timed to the nation’s 250th birthday. Nothing like it had been staged on the Mall before.
Will There Be a DC State Fair in 2027?
Not this version. The Great American State Fair was created for a singular federal moment and there is no 2027 edition planned.
The neighborhood DC State Fair is a different thing entirely. DC’s own annual state fair — a beloved Columbia Heights tradition with homemade pie competitions, locally grown produce, and handmade goods — typically returns every September.
